Jury Finds Rolls Royce Guilty of Fraud Against Carnival

Jury Finds Rolls Royce Guilty of Fraud Against Carnival

Fowler Rodriguez Valdes-Fauli, an internationally recognized maritime law firm obtained a $24 million dollar verdict for Carnival Cruise Lines against Rolls-Royce. Rolls Royce was found guilty of fraud by a unanimous jury. Rolls Royce marketed its Mermaid pod propulsion system to Carnival for operation on their largest and most prestigious ship, the Queen Mary II. The jury found that at the time Rolls Royce presented its pod to Carnival, Rolls-Royce knew that the pod was defective and not fully developed.

Lead counsel for Carnival, George Fowler, argued that Rolls-Royce rushed into the market to defeat their competitors and sold an untested product that failed throughout the cruise industry. Furthermore, Fowler argued that ...

BAE Systems Develops Laser to Defend Against Pirate Attacks

BAE Systems Develops Laser to Defend Against Pirate Attacks

Bristol, UK - BAE Systems has successfully demonstrated a prototype device that will serve as an effective non-lethal deterrent against pirate attacks on commercial vessels such as oil tankers and container ships.

Piracy worldwide is on the rise according to reports from the ICC’s International Maritime Bureau (IMB), with 430 attacks worldwide reported last year, up from 406 in 2009. As pirates increase their range of operations and their capabilities, commercial shipping agents are increasingly looking for ways of preventing attacks while avoiding armed guards on their ships.

In order to help combat the growing piracy threat BAE Systems conducted a study of pirate’s behaviour and a company-wide capability ...

Trans Alaska Pipeline Still Shutdown

Trans Alaska Pipeline Still Shutdown

The Trans Alaska Pipeline was shutdown Saturday after a ten barrel leak was discovered at a pump station located on the northern end of the pipeline in Prudhoe Bay.

Oil companies operating the pipeline have been forced to slow output to just 5 percent of their daily average of 640,000 barrels per day. The pipeline, more than 3 decades old, is becoming more expensive to maintain and today only handles a third of what it did in the 80’s.

The 800-mile pipeline moves oil from Prudhoe Bay oilfield to the port of Valdez in southern Alaska. Oil is being stored in Prudhoe Bay while the leak is being fixed. ...

The Un-Comfort Zone by Robert Wilson- January 2011

"KEEP YOUR POWER"

"Baby Bobby! Baby Bobby!" The words stung and Mike knew it - he could read it in my face.

"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me!" I yelled back.

Mike just laughed; he knew I didn't believe it. Bolstered by figuring out how to push my buttons, he continued to torment me as I walked home from school.

"Baby Bobby! Baby Bobby!"

The charge had an element of truth because I had cried several times in first grade, but I was now in fifth grade and had long outgrown my fear ...

Fuel Cells For Marine Propulsion

Fuel Cells For Marine Propulsion

by Louis Lemos, Former Project Leader, Engineering Design Group, Navy Division, United States Defense Attaché Office, Saigon, Vietnam

FUEL CELL DEVELOPMENT - Various scientific theories and subsequent discoveries have been identified as stepping stones in the evolution of what has become known as the Fuel Cell, for the purpose of generating electricity through heat. The concept of "Thermoelectric Generation" discovered by Seebeck around 1821, is based on the principle that current is produced in a closed circuit of two dissimilar metals, if the two junctions are maintained at different temperatures, such as in thermocouples for measuring temperature.

Potentials are produced by thermocouples, typically, in the order of ...

What DHS Has Failed to Fix, is Fixable

What DHS Has Failed to Fix, is Fixable

Part 1 of 2

by Dr. Jim Giermanski, Chairman, Powers Global Holdings, Inc.

Among many of its problems, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has three that are serious vulnerabilities for the United States: In-Bonds, Transshipments, and Outbound Container Shipments. These three issues are also important for the U.S. International Trade Commission's (USITC) role in protecting intellectual property rights. These are not new and there are multiple options to address and correct them. What is more disturbing is that it is well known that these agencies are aware of these vulnerabilities, but have not addressed them. The fact that DHS focuses on air, as recently demonstrated by the Transportation ...
