Passenger Charged With Releasing Cruise Ship Anchor

The FBI reports that a California man entered a restricted area and released the rear anchor of Holland America’s MS Ryndam. The cruise ship was travelling from Tampa, FL to Costa Maya, Mexico when the incident occurred early Saturday morning.

The ship was not damaged and no one was injured. During questioning with FBI officials, Rick Ehlert admitted releasing the anchor and throwing a life buoy overboard. Forty-four year old Ehlert, says he was drunk when he released the anchor and claims the cruise ship’s anchor release system was similar to his system on his 50-foot boat.

MSRC Announces USCG Compliant Dispersant Program

The Marine Spill Response Corporation (MSRC) and the Marine Preservation Association (MPA) announced MSRC's intention to fulfill customer's regulatory planning obligations for dispersant capability as promulgated by the United States Coast Guard (USCG).

MSRC customers may cite MSRC singularly, with one exception as noted below for Hawaii, within MSRC's Operations Area, which includes the coastal environment of the U.S. and the U.S. Caribbean.

In Hawaii, MSRC has been working with Clean Islands Council (CIC) to support CIC's efforts for USCG acceptance of a plan that takes advantage of existing resources in Hawaii and supplements it with MSRC's significant dispersant stockpile and access to MSRC's C-130 aircraft. Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd. v. Regal-Beloit Corp applies retroactively to those cases pending on direct appeal at the time the U.S. Supreme Court issued its opinion.

The Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit (“Court of Appeal”) recently reversed and remanded a district court decision holding that the Carmack Amendment does not apply to international multimodal shipment originated overseas under an intermodal through waybill. The Court of Appeal retroactively applied the Supreme Court’s reasoning from Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd. v. Regal-Beloit Corp (“Kawasaki”), which abrogated the binding precedent at the time.

U.S. Sentences Pirate to 30 Years in Prison

Jama Idle Ibrahim was sentenced to 30 years in prison Monday after admitting his role in the April 10 attack on a U.S. Navy ship off the Somali coast.

The U.S. District Court in Norfolk, VA sentenced Ibrahim after he plead guilty to the following charges: an attack to plunder a vessel, an act of violence against persons on a vessel, and use of a firearm during a crime of violence.

Six Somali nationals were arrested in April for attacking the USS Ashland, which they claim they mistook for a merchant vessel.

The other five men face trial for similar charges.

DP World Officials Meet Indian President

HE Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman, Dubai World and DP World, accompanied by Mohammed Sharaf, Chief Executive Officer, DP World, met last week the President of India, Her Excellency, Pratibha Patil, who was on a four-day official visit to the UAE.

Their talks focused on the historic and friendly relations between the two countries and the important role DP World has played in facilitating trade through the five marine terminals it operates across India.

Workboat Academy Graduates Ten Cadets

On Friday, November 19, 2010 ten Cadets of the Workboat Academy at Pacific Maritime Institute in Seattle finished the Academic requirements of their 2 year Program.

Once they sit for their USCG exam they will hold a 500 GRT Oceans/1600 GRT Near Coastal License.

Their Sponsoring Partner Companies, Instructors, Family and Friends were all present during the Ceremony which was held over dinner at the Maritime Event Center on Seattle’s waterfront.

Company's northern California group first to complete voluntary exams for 100% of vessels in its San Francisco Bay fleet

Foss Maritime is an industry leader in safety and compliance, U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral J.R. Castillo (pictured) said after the company's San Francisco Bay Area-based tug group became the first to complete voluntary examinations for all of the vessels in its Northern California group.

Company officials say the rest of Foss' fleet will soon pass the voluntary exam, which the Coast Guard and federal government consider a bridge to mandatory towing vessel regulations in the future.

A 72 year-old survivor from a yacht that sank off Australia in appalling weather conditions last year, was reunited with his rescuer in an emotional ceremony held on 24 November 2010 at the Headquarters of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Dr. Jerome Morgan, of the United States, was on hand to thank personally Fijian seaman James Fanifau when the latter received, from IMO Secretary-General Efthimios E. Mitropoulos, the 2010 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea for his part in plucking Dr. Morgan from the sea in a highly dangerous rescue operation.

U.S. Navy Responds to Attack

Crew onboard the MV 26 AGUSTOS reported being under attack, Saturday November 28, while sailing through the Horn of Africa. The crew locked themselves in the ships engine room during the attack where pirates couldn’t get tot hem.

Nearby USS Shoup, part of the multinational task force, was alerted of the attack. Pirates, unable to get to the crew or the engine, fled before the warship arrived. A team from the USS Shoup boarded the vessel to let the crew know they were safe.

On November 8th, 2010 the Carnival Cruise The Splendor experienced a fire on its engine room which caused the loss of power and electricity leaving adrift the vessel with 3,300 passengers plus 1,167 crew members about 130 miles west of Ensenada, Mexico just a day after its departure from Long Beach, California.

Training provider Videotel Marine International is delighted to announce it has signed an agreement with Mitsui O.S.K Lines Ltd to upgrade its existing video and DVD library to the fully loaded Videotel on Demand (VOD) training systems.

ABS & CCS Sign New Cooperation Agreement

ABS and the China Classification Society (CCS) strengthened their collaborative efforts by entering into a new Cooperation Agreement on 24 November in Washington, DC. While the agreement is comprehensive, the offshore industry will be a priority area of focus for the two leading classification societies.
