U.S. Navy Recovers Body of Missing Sailor

The United States Navy has recovered the body of a sailor from the USS Halsey, that went missing yesterday in the Gulf of Oman. The sailor was reported missing after he didn't report to watch Tuesday. After a search of the ship was conduced man overboard was announced. US and British forces conducted search and rescue operations Tuesday, and announced Wednesday morning that the body of the missing sailor had been found.

Helicopters from Halsey, USNS Rainier, and the Royal Navy's HMS Cumberland assisted in the search, as well as F/A 18 Hornets from the USS Abraham Lincoln and a P-3 maritime patrol aircraft.

 Father and Son Dead After Collision With Cargo Ship

Two fishermen died last night of hypothermia after their fishing boat collided with a cargo ship in the waters between Jutland and Zealand.

The men’s 42-foot fishing boat sank while the 180-foot Swedish flagged cargo ship suffered only a gash in its hull.

Crew from the cargo ship, VINGA, pulled one of the men from the water after almost an hour. A local search team rescued the other man some forty minutes later. The father and son, aged 72 and 43, were rushed to the hospital where it became clear that hypothermia had set in. They were pronounced dead shortly after their arrival.

Royal Caribbean Waiter Found Guilty of Drug Smuggling

Bermuda’s Supreme Court found Ricardo Stewart, 32, guilty of conspiring to smuggle more than $424,000 worth of cocaine into the country via the ship he was working on.

The former Royal Caribbean employee was a waiter onboard Explorer of the Seas. The Jamaican native claims he is innocent and that he barley knew the accomplices he was alleged to have worked with and denies being involved in any drug trade.

The smuggling ring had been successful until a 3.9 kg package of cocaine was found hidden under a chair in the ship’s disco while it was undergoing refurbishing last June. The found drugs had a street value of $735,000. ...

Hostage-Taking At Sea Rises To Record Levels, Says IMB

More people were taken hostage at sea in 2010 than in any year on record, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) International Maritime Bureau’s (IMB) global piracy report disclosed today. Pirates captured 1,181 seafarers and killed eight. A total of 53 ships were hijacked.

The number of pirate attacks against ships has risen every year for the last four years, IMB revealed. Ships reported 445 attacks in 2010, up 10% from 2009. While 188 crew members were taken hostage in 2006, 1,050 were taken in 2009 and 1,181 in 2010.

Northrop Awarded Contract to Build 5th USCG Cutter

The U.S. Coast Guard has awarded Northrop Grumman an $89 million fixed price contract for long-lead material acquisition for the production of a fifth cutter. The contract also includes options that could increase the value to $94 million.

In a statement Northrop said, “The funds will be used to purchase long lead time materials and major equipment in support of the new ship, such as main propulsion and navigation systems, generators, electrical switchboards, major castings and the ship's integrated control system.”

The 418-foot Legend-Class cutters are the flagships of the coast guard and are designed to replace the 378-foot Hamilton Class High Endurance Cutters, commissioned in the 1960s. The ...

Australia: Offshore Petroleum Exploration Permits Awarded

The Australian Government announced today that seven offshore exploration permits from the 2009 Offshore Petroleum Acreage Release have been awarded in Commonwealth waters off Western Australia and South Australia.

The proposed work programs across the seven permits will result in guaranteed offshore petroleum exploration investment of $682 million over the next three years.

Three permits, awarded to Finder No.4 Pty Ltd, Woodside Energy Pty Ltd and Riverina Energy Pty Ltd, are in the highly prospective Carnarvon Basin which remains Australia’s leading offshore petroleum-producing area.

Change reflects Lunar New Year factory closures

TOKYO -The New World Alliance said today it will temporarily reduce capacity on selected Trans-Pacific Trade services to coincide with Lunar New Year factory shutdowns in Asia. The three container shipping lines in the alliance -- APL, Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) -- said the winter deployment program is expected to last six weeks; more if necessary.

TradeWinds Towing Acquires New Tugboat

TradeWinds Towing is pleased to announce the addition of the former Seabulk tug "CHALLENGER" to their fleet. This 3800 bhp tug with nozzles is presently on an endurance tow to southern Chile.

Noble Corporation to Construct Two New Ultra-Deepwater Drillships

Noble Corporation (NYSE: NE) today announced that a subsidiary has signed a contract with Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. ("HHI") for the construction of two ultra-deepwater drillships, increasing the Company's number of floating drilling units to 26, 14 of which are dynamically positioned. The new ultra-deepwater drillships, to be named at a later date, will be constructed on a fixed price basis at HHI's shipyard in Ulsan, Korea, with expected deliveries from the shipyard in the second and fourth quarters of 2013, respectively. Operations are expected to commence 90-120 days after delivery following mobilization and acceptance testing.
