 European Union Naval Forces (EU NAVFOR) reports that the Panama flagged MV ORNA was pirated Monday in the Indian Ocean, 400 nautical miles North East of the Seychelles. Two pirate skiffs approached the bulk carrier, firing small arms and rocket propelled grenades at the vessel. The ship was forced to a stop and was subsequently boarded by pirates. EU NAVFOR also reports that the ship was not registered with the Maritime Security Centre-Horn of Africa (MSCHOA) or the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), so the number and nationality of crew is unknown. Read More>>>Back to Top |  The Chilean copper port, known as Dona Ines de Collahuasi’s Patache has been shutdown after an accident over the weekend. Three workers were killed when part of a ship-loader collapsed on December 18. The shutdown has forced Anglo American Plc and Xstrata Plc, joint owners of the copper mine shipping out of the port, to declare force majeure. Force majeure is a legal clause issued by companies when they cannot meet contracted deliveries due to reasons beyond their control. Read More>>>Back to Top |  One is dead and another is missing after a Chinese trawler and a South Korean Coast Guard ship collided about 74 miles off South Korea's Eocheong Island Saturday afternoon. Two small South Korean patrol boats launched from the 3,000-ton coast guard ship, approached the trawler for illegally fishing in South Korean waters. When the coast guard teams tried to board the vessel the Chinese crew responded by swinging iron pipes, shovels and clubs at them, injuring four Korean Coast Guardsman. During the commotion the 63-ton Chinese vessel rammed into the 3,000-ton South Korean coastguard ship, causing the trawler to capsize and sending ten of the Chinese crew overboard.

Read More>>>Back to Top |  Around 7:35 Friday morning a fire lead to an explosion at Northrop Grumman’s Pascagoula, Mississippi shipyard. The fire is thought to be the result of a busted acetylene line, which may have subsequently caused a gas line to explode. The explosion reportedly shook buildings in the area. The explosion occurred on land and not onboard a ship. Initial reports reveal no damage to any ships. Pascagoula Fire Department responded to the incident but shipyard emergency response already had the fire under control and it was quickly distinguished. The EUNAVFOR and the Combined Maritime Force (CMF) worked together to evacuate the man, after reports came in that he may be suffering from appendicitis. The Tunisian master of the ship contacted authorities on December 16 to report that he had a crewmember with severe stomach pains and requested assistance. On Friday North Korea warned the South that it would launch a military strike if the drill take place as planned. The ship was 120-miles southwest of St. Petersburg, FL at the time of the incident. On Saturday around 5:15 p.m., crew onboard the cruise ship contacted the St. Petersburg, FL coast guard command center. The crew reported that Andrew Spicer, had fallen aboard the ship and was in need of medical evacuation for further treatment. The coast guard center launched its HH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter from the Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater around 7:05 and arrived at the Ryndam around 8:00.
