 Barbara and John Davey were onboard Royal Caribbean’s Brilliance of the Seas in December when the ship encountered violent weather in the Mediterranean sea. Just three days after being tossed about her cabin, Barbara Davey fell into a coma. When the ship reached Malta Barbara was taken to a nearby hospital and later airlifted to Britain where she died on January 7. In a statement released following the violent weather, Royal Caribbean said that more than 100 passengers had been injured, most of them minor injuries with only the most serious reported as fractures. Read More>>>Back to Top |  On Sunday the Russian Transport Ministry announced that Krasin and Admiral Makarov icebreakers had finally freed a fish processing ship that had been trapped in the ice since New Years Eve. The SODRUZHESTVO, became trapped in the ice in the Sea of Okhotsk on December 31. The fish processing ship was the last of fives vessels to be rescued from the frigid seas off Russia’s east coat. The vessels large size required rescue crews to clear a wider path in order to free the ship and tow it to open waters. Read More>>>Back to Top |  Seven Somali men accused of piracy arrived in Malaysia Monday where they could face trial for hijacking a Malaysian operated chemical tanker in the Gulf of Aden. Malaysian legal experts are working to determine whether or not the seven can be charged in Malaysia. The Malaysian government has issued a remand to hold the pirates for two weeks, during which time the suspects will be questioned to determine what charges, if any will be filed against them. The Indian warship, INS VINDHYAGIRI and Cyprus-flagged container vessel, MV NORDLAKE collided in Mumbai Harbor Sunday, causing a fire to break out in the engine room of the VINDHYAGIRI. The vessel was brought to the navy dockyard where eight fire tankers worked to extinguish the blaze onboard. Firefighters continued to work on extinguishing the fire Monday morning, and an additional eight fire tankers were brought in to help. Everyone onboard the ship was evacuated and no injuries from either ship have been reported. ... The platform is located approximately 93 miles offshore Louisiana, south of Lake Charles, in about 173 feet of water. The platform, which has not been in production for nearly a decade, is currently used to process natural gas and condensate from other facilities. With BOEMRE’s approval and after several safety system evaluations, Apache personnel re-boarded the platform January 19 and began work to kill the leaking well. The exact timing of his retirement will be announced later. Also, Mr Johansson will not be available to continue in his position as a member of the Wärtsilä Board of Directors. Wärtsilä's Board of Directors has started the process to appoint a successor for Mr Johansson.
